The Penwith Gallery’s ‘Hepworth Room’ is home to unique exhibitions from our own Penwith Gallery Archive Collection, artistic luminaries of the 20th Century and loaned works from ‘Friends of The Penwith’ as well as pop up educational shows. Along with our varied exhibitions of artworks The Hepworth Room also displays treasures from our paper archive of both The Penwith Society and Penwith Galleries Ltd. On permanent display in The Hepworth Room is our pride and joy, Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture ‘Magic Stone’, John Milne’s sculpture ‘Wave Form’ and a wonderful 8ft photograph of Barbara by Peter Kinnear.

Specific past shows include ‘Jeff Harris and friends’ in conjunction with The Belgrave Gallery and an exclusive ‘Cornel Lucas’ photography exhibition. This year we will be continuing to host exclusive exhibitions with renowned photographer Brian Seed in July and as a special Christmas time treat, an exhibition of Christmas cards by the sculptor Denis Mitchell in November. We will also be hosting a joint exhibition of artist and author Tom Cross with The Belgrave Gallery in October.

New Gallery: Michael Praed | A Retrospective Exhibition

A solo exhibition of paintings by Michael Praed.

Michael Praed is one of the most well-known contemporary artists working in Cornwall. He is a prolific painter, working mainly in oils and pastels, drawing inspiration from the Cornish countryside and people. Strongly graphical, his paintings of the coastline, cliff formations, harbour walls and fishermen with their nets are instantly recognisable. It has been said that his work is an intriguing combination of realism and abstraction, portraying the beauty of the landscape and seascape with a sense of unease in a way that no other artist has achieved: farmsteads huddle together against an unseen enemy in a landscape devoid of living things; deserted breakwaters curve pincer-like into an empty sea; engine houses rise from the ground like megaliths, as old as time.

Born in 1942 from a long line of Mousehole luggermen, Michael Praed was educated at Penzance and Falmouth School of Art followed by Brighton College of Art. In 1967 he became a member of the Newlyn Society of Artist, and has been a member of the Penwith Society of Artists since 1972. He has exhibited widely, retiring from teaching in 1993 to paint full time. His work ranges from large paintings of the sea and landscape to smaller images depicting familiar scenes of Cornishmen at work; from lonely beaches to the bustle of a fish market, but always illustrating his observational and technical skills as both a painter and draughtsman to marvellous effect.

    Studio Gallery: Iona Sanders

Iona Sanders’ latest series of paintings explore the energy and life in the mundane, the ordinary, and the stress that comes with everyday domesticity.

Based on a series of sketches made over the course of one non-extraordinary day from her home in Lelant, Iona describes the day in question:

“Nothing special happened: did some washing, did the dishes, answered some WhatsApp messages, did some emails, walked the dog… my home is fairly colourful, my daughters make fabulous models and my daily dog walk is amazing. I think it’s mindfulness that allows you to see beauty in the little things, the things that are under your nose, and I am happy to share my response to this.”
