St Anthony Head

St Anthony Head is a National Trust property situated at the western tip of the Roseland Peninsula. It overlooks the entrance to the Carrick Roads and the Fal river estuary, the third largest natural harbour in the world.

Here you will find the former St Anthony Battery, built in 1895–97 to defend the mouth of the River Fal. It was used during both World Wars before being decommissioned in 1956. Most of the buildings remain and can be walked around, the path below the walls lead to a bird hide overlooking a hidden cove.

Below the battery is St Anthony lighthouse which was built in 1835 and although no longer manned (the keepers cottage is now a self-catering property!) the light continues to warn sailors of the headland and dangerous rocks offshore.

You may also recognise the lighthouse as the opening shot of popular 1980s TV show, Fraggle Rock.

There is a National Trust car park and seasonal toilets.
